Frequently asked questions

Things that come up

In most cases, yes. The Teal Wand has the same profile as a tampon applicator, requires only a few inches of insertion, and uses a soft sponge tip. Because you are in complete control and can stop at any time, many people with vaginismus find self-collection significantly more manageable than a speculum exam. A Teal Medical provider will review your specific situation during your Intro Visit.

No. You are never required to share anything you are not comfortable sharing. It is helpful to know if you have a history of trauma as this helps to guide your care, however, ultimately what or how you share is up to you.The Intro Visit is focused on your screening eligibility. If you choose to share context, your Teal Medical provider is trained in trauma-informed care principles and will listen without judgment.

Contact Teal's support team through your portal. An incomplete collection shows as an invalid result, not a clinical finding, so there is no risk of a false result. Teal's team will work with you on next steps, whether that means trying again or exploring other options with a provider.

At Teal Health, we want to ensure all of the women who self-collect using the Teal Wand understand the importance of an abnormal result, feel supported, and receive clear instructions on next steps so they feel empowered to follow through with the additional procedures.

Triage following an ‘abnormal’ result with the Teal Wand is guided by ASCCP Risk-Based Management Consensus Guidelines. The patient will receive their results digitally through their Teal portal. Our medical providers will then discuss the results with the patient via a video visit and provide referrals for follow-up care as needed. If appropriate, the referral care can be coordinated with their existing OBGYN or if they do not have a provider, we will refer them to someone in their area who can perform the follow up. Teal Medical providers help create a safe, non-judgmental, empowered space where we recognize the impact of trauma to a patient's experience. We shift the focus from “this is what you should do” to “what would YOU like to do”. This provides an empowered patient visit where the patient is in control and their voice matters. In practice, your provider follows your lead, explains every step before it happens, and never pushes for information you are not ready to share. This standard is consistent across the full Teal Medical provider team. If in-person follow-up is needed, Teal's referral network is held to the same standard.

The Intro Visit is a brief virtual visit with a Teal Medical provider, conducted entirely over video from your own home. There is no physical component of any kind. The visit focuses on your screening eligibility and medical history. You are never required to disclose your trauma history. You can have a trusted person with you during the call if that would help.

Yes. You can have a trusted person present during the virtual Intro Visit if that would help. During at-home collection, you are in your own space and can have anyone nearby that makes you feel safe. There are no restrictions on who can be present because there is no clinical environment to control.
