“The Teal Wand will give providers valuable time back during in-clinic visits to focus on other essential health topics—strengthening the patient-provider relationship.”
Liz Swenson, MD, OBGYN and Medical Director at Teal Health
How will referring patients to Teal Health work?
Refer + Prescribe
Patients can be referred by their provider, or they can complete an intake form directly on our website. A Teal provider will meet with the patient virtually, confirm eligibility, and prescribe the kit.
Screen At-Home
The patient will receive the kit, collect their sample using educational materials and virtual support from Teal Health, and mail the sample to the lab.
Results + Follow-up
Results will be available in the patient’s Teal portal and providers will be accessible virtually to discuss next steps. Results can also be shared to the referring provider along with any follow-up care recommendations.
Want to discuss partnership opportunities?
Contact Teal HealthWith the Teal Wand, your sample is tested for Primary HPV, the most sensitive cervical cancer screening test
Primary HPV testing is the recommended cervical cancer screening test by the American Cancer Society2 and the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF)3.
Primary HPV Testing“If we were to start cervical cancer screening today, we’d never select a screening test with a sensitivity of 50 percent if there was an alternative with greater than 90 percent.4
It’s time we allow the Pap test to enjoy a well-deserved retirement.”
Thomas Lorey, MD, pathologist, senior consultant and former director of laboratory services for Kaiser Permanente Northern California
SELF-COLLECT CAN IMPROVE FOLLOW-UP ADHERENCE
Research shows self-collect leads to higher follow-up care - as high as 85-94%5, compared to 50% today6

Will it be covered by insurance?
As Teal will first begin shipping in California, we are working with most major insurance plans in California, including Cigna, Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross, and Blue Shield of California. We will also have a cash pay option and are HSA/FSA available. Teal is actively working to expand coverage and make screening at home accessible and affordable.
When will it be available?
The Teal Wand is now FDA-approved. It will begin shipping to California in June and expanding to more states shortly after that.
Which of my patients would benefit from the Teal Wand?
The Teal Wand is designed for all people with a cervix, across body types, however for patients who are underscreened, have trouble getting in-person care, or who face challenges tolerating a speculum, self-collection can be especially beneficial.
Consider at-home self-collection for patients who:
- Are within screening ages of 25-65 years old, and do not have a health history of cancer in the reproductive system
- Are behind on their routine screenings
- Experience pain or severe discomfort with the speculum. Sensitivity can be heightened for peri- or menopausal women
- Experience vulvar or vaginal conditions (e.g., lichen sclerosus, fibrotic syndromes) that make tolerating a speculum challenging or not possible
- Have personal histories of sexual trauma, birthing trauma, PTSD, gender dysphoria, or who are otherwise uncomfortable with an in-clinic speculum exam
Will I be informed of my patient’s screening results?
With patient consent, Teal Health can share screening results with referring providers.
What happens if the result is abnormal (positive hrHPV)?
At Teal Health, we want to ensure all of the women who self-collect using the Teal Wand understand the importance of an abnormal result, feel supported, and receive clear instructions on next steps so they feel empowered to follow through with the additional procedures.
Triage following an ‘abnormal’ result with the Teal Wand is guided by ASCCP Risk-Based Management Consensus Guidelines. The patient will receive their results digitally through their Teal portal. Our medical providers will then discuss the results with the patient via a video visit and provide referrals for follow-up care as needed. If appropriate, the referral care can be coordinated with their existing OBGYN or if they do not have a provider, we will refer them to someone in their area who can perform the follow up.
How can I get the Teal Wand in my practice?
The Teal Wand is a prescription device and therefore initially available directly through Teal Health or through established partners. If interested in discussing a partnership or requesting informational materials to have available in your office, please contact us.
